Sound Browser Garageband Ipad

Setup with the iPad version of GarageBand with an external device is fairly simple. Once your interface is connected, like the iTrack Dock or the iRig Pro DUO, you'll need to go into input settings to turn on the 'Monitor' option and select the correct input. Get started with GarageBand for iPad The first time you open GarageBand, you see the Sound browser, where you can choose a Touch Instrument to play. There are Touch Instruments for keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, strings, and more, designed to help you make music easily.

This may sound very simple, but here's my problem:

Garageband ipad manual

I plug my guitar in to my iPad2 to use the guitar amplifier in Garage Band. No sound comes out of the iPad when I play. I can see the green light above the cable icon in GarageBand, so I know it's getting a signal from my guitar. I have tried switching on 'monitor', but to no avail. It looks like a great app, but it can't seem to do one of the most basic things it's supposed to do.
