Dear Folks,

as you probably know, since Adobe has bought Macromedia, they dropped a lot of really good products or changed them in a sometimes unsatisfactory way. Especially Freehand is missed by a lot of Graphic Designers and if you do not have an old machine running Mac OSX Snow Leopard there is actually no way to be productive in the good old classical style. Really?

No, there is a solution and this is: Use a virtual machine ! In theory this works, in practice there are a lot of obstacles … However, good old Dr. Sven had managed to set up the whole scenario and I will tell you how it works. Before you start, please take deep breaths and promise you will not drop to floor, crying loud and blame everyone you see. You need to be patient! I needed a few hours to find all the information, resources and solutions. I can show you the solutions here, however, you need to take care about getting and downloading the resources by yourself:

(1) What virtual machine can be used? We have three major players here: VM Ware, Virtualbox and Parallels. To make it short: Only Parallels (link) works. Virtual Machine and VM Ware limit the screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and there is no way to get a better resolution – believe me. I looked up all the forums stuff I could find and all “solutions” led to nothing. You can just download the Parallels Desktop version.

(2) When using Parallels you need to install the Parallels Tools – this is needed for the screen resolution and for fullscreen modus. Easy to install, but the tricky part is to find it. When you download Parallels you need to go into the Parallels package and navigate to to the folder /Applications/Parallels Desktop.app/Contents/Resources/Tools/prl-tools-lin.iso and mount this image. There you will find the Parallels Tools. So that was easy (puuuh). Oh and btw.: I only tried this on Mac, I don’t know where to find that on a Windows machine.

(3) Install Mac OSX Snow Leopard Server: So here is another tricky part. You cannot use Mac OSX Snow Leopard (normal version), you need to install Mac OSX Snow Leopard Server. It is nearly impossible to find the server version in the internet. If you live in China you could try the peer2peer network. Please note that this is not legal in western countries. And again: You cannot use the normal Max OSX Snow Leopard (neither Leopard, or Tiger or any of these) . The reason is that the normal versions only run on original Apple software and since Parallels is a virtual machine it does not support the the normal version of Snow Leopard. Hint: Finding a working Mac OSX Snow Leopard Server is tedious. You need to patient. Fortunately I had one left from my earlier company.

(4) After all these steps you are finally ready to install Freehand on your Mac OSX Snow Leopard OS in Parallels. Oh but wait, there was this issue that Freehand didn’t run in Snow Leopard without a small patch delivered for free by Adobe that time. So you finally need to follow this procedure:

a. Install Freehand

  1. Maps' database has been created with digital formats, mainly Macromedia Freehand (eps) and Adobe Illustrator (ai), which makes it easy to adapt to the new standards.   2. Jan 02, 2021 'Libfreehand is a library that parses the file format of Aldus/Macromedia/Adobe FreeHand documents. It supports documents from version 3 to 11.' Additionally: Even it is first of all a library, it comes together with a converter tool fh2svg which converts FreeHand format files to SVG.

b. Download the Freehand Reg file FreeHand_MXa_Registration (link) (please note that Adobe does not host this file anymore but some clever guy has stored it that time)

c. Open your finder and go to:Macintosh/Library/Application Support
– Create a folder called Macromedia (if there is none there)
– Copy you downloaded unzipped Freehand Reg file and paste it into the Macromedia folder

d. Then also go to: Macintosh/Users/youraccount/Library/Application Support
– Create a folder called Macromedia (if there is none there)
